History of the Society of St. Ursula

A young French woman, later to be known as Mother Anne de Xainctonge became deeply aware of the lack of educational opportunities for the girls of her time and was inspired to open schools.

On 29 th November 1596 , Mother Anne left her native town, Dijion, France, inspite of all resistance from her family to start the Society of St. Ursula. Through struggles and sufferings, she founded the Society of St. Ursula on 16 th June, 1606.

Many young women joined and committed themselves to this noble profession of educating girls and women of their time.

In 1953, a few Swiss Sisters came to India to continue the good work Mother Anne had begun. The three schools in Pune, namely St. Ursula High School , Nigdi ,Stella Maris School, Vadgaonsheri, Kamal Nayan Bajaj School, Chinchwad, St. Ursula School at Kankavli, Sindhudurg, St. Ursula School at Dhaban, Gujarat and St. Theresa School at Hidkal dam, Karnataka are Sister institutions

History of Stella Maris School

Our Foundress said :“ We will not carry big torches, which will throw light far and wide; but we will carry little lamps which will throw some light on the path of women and girls ”.

We, the sisters of the Society of St. Ursula, wanted to do the same in Vadgaonsheri area. Thus Stella Maris School was raised up as an English Medium School in the year of 1979. It is continued to be managed by the Sisters of Society of St. Ursula.

Initially it remained as a tiny bud in the form of K.G section from 1972 – 78. Gradually, from 1978 it began to bloom slowly and every year a new class was added. The first batch of SSC students appeared for their Board Exam in 1989 with one division of students. Now it is a full fledged school with three divisions accommodating nearly 2300 children.

The school is recoginsed by the Government of Maharashtra and is permanently a private unaided minority school. The syllabus as followed is that prescribed by the department of Education. It is a Co- Ed school.
